A woman's 40th birthday comes on like a tsunami, especially when life's biggest excitement means finding a wad of fudge in a half gallon of ice cream. For Susanna Greyson, the day prompts her to set five goals. They don't include the invention of personal jet packs or finding the cure for cancer, but for a bored mother, they might as well. As she takes a stab at each goal, she encounters hilarious and heartening complications that reap unexpected results, including an attraction to her daughter's history teacher. An unpredictable cast of characters buoys her along the way, and in the end, her goal list remains incomplete but at least attempted. She has faced the tsunami head-on and emerged on the other side ready to chunnel through the next forty years with gusto.

More like Chunneling Through Sixty. I'm 39, married, with 4 kids and I cannot relate to anything in this book. Frankly, it feels like the author turned 40 sometime in the 1980s for how up to date this books' details seemed.
I mean it was painfully outdated.

Aerobics? Really? Jazz piano? O - kay. Drink a Zima and grab your walkman on your way to Contempo Casuals while you're at it.

Those first two stories/ list items were as far as I got through the book. I just couldn't look forward to anything else on her list.

I should have known just from that cover design this was not going to resonate with me.

To end on something nice, I think I liked the children's descriptions a lot. Honestly, I think the author was likely a good mom by the way she wrote about the children.

I think if this was actually set in the 80s with a nostalgic throwback-type theme, it would actually work much better.

Chunneling Through Forty eBook Anne McAneny Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was laugh out loud funny, which is VERY rare for me. Very clever writing. While I couldn't really relate to the freak out over turning 40, I enjoyed it all just the same. It was a very nice story and I will look for more by this author.
I got this book because it was free, but it was thoroughly entertaining. Susanna, the main character, is a little freaked out by the thought of turning forty and embarks on a quest to live her various dreams. There were times I wanted to shake her, but overall, the book was a lot of fun and anyone who reads it will love Eddie - what a great guy!
Oh I know, I'm a man, and being too old at 70 I couldn't possibly understand..
But are there really so many women out there that can't stand up for themselves in a conversation, that can't simply state their feelings without completely folding at the first hurdle?
Why is that so many people take it upon themselves to worry about, therefore to take responsibility for other peoples' feelings and reactions? How is it that so many people don't realise that they do not control other peoples' minds, therefore to try to take responsibility for the way people take in information is almost the apex of presumption!
So, some of the above diatribe is what I see in this novel; the main character appears to take it upon herself that nobody is hurt by anything she says or thinks, thereby constantly causing herself discomfort because she dare not open her mouth. On top of that she is so almighty conscious of herself, her figure, her age, her uncertain thoughts that I must say I am impressed that she actually decided to take aerobic classes, or even talk to almost anybody at all; indeed it seems quite uncharacteristic that she did.
They say that a character has to be somewhat of a reflection of the author so I am impressed that this author wrote it all down.. But then I've only read half the book; I'll let you know what I think when I've read the rest.
I was looking forward to reading this book but I almost put it away couple of times in the first half of it. I never really grew to like the main character. Her urge to prove herself just fell flat. It seemed to me that she created all her so called problems just being bored and I was bored as a reader most of the time as well. There was a chuckle time to time but no LOL moments for me. I do not recomend.
I love love this book and because I'm around 40 I can relate to some of the things. I especially love the words of
Wisdom from Eddie........ And I have 3 teenagers!!!!!

I'm going to buy another book from you as I love your writing style and would love to know when your new book comes out too!

Good luck for your movie and look out John Locks system of how to sell books online! I think you have 2 books out? Just like my husband !!

Keep up the great work....I'm your fan.

Best wishes Wendy Crowther xxx
Ok, yeah - I got it because it was cheap. That and the fact that it was about a woman I thought I could maybe relate to. Turns out I can't relate to her at all, but I'd probably be one of her friends if she actually existed! The humor was very intelligent humor - really rare. Loved it. I'm not going to criticize some of the plot lines or oddly thrown in characters (neighbor lady) - it was a fun, cheap read that most women can find some things to laugh at. Enjoyed it for just that. I will look for more by this author.
After reading Raveled by this author I was dying to read more of her work. I'm so glad I did.
Susanna hits forty and begins working off her list of goals for the year. The premise might sound boring, but this is no ordinary list. The people Susanna meets are a diverse group of individuals who each have something to teach her as she is teaching herself, her family and friends that you can teach an old dog new tricks.
My favorite character is Eddie, a former history teacher, Blues guru and philosopher. He is a teller of tales that are true
and humbling and he is generous of his time and spirit.
I found this novel not only laugh out loud funny but thought provoking. I think it taught this old dog a few tricks as well!
BTW - chunneling refers to the practice of using a grapefruit spoon to dig out the clumps of chocolate etc in a pint of icecream. Now that is a really good trick.
